Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is a wonderful organization that gives financial support to men and women in the construction trade who have life-altering injuries. Every year the Foundation honors multiple recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was delighted to present Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, originally from Pakistan, obtained his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil suffered a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the function of his left arm and the experience left his left leg greatly impaired, causing foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors feared that he would most likely become confined to a wheelchair.

No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their single source of income, putting financial pressure on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help a person with foot drop walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the apparatus in addition to the comprehensive rehab that would be needed so he could learn how to use it.

Fortunately, a specialist at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, due to the incredible grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is starting to regenerate and not atrophy, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
